Leary Family Fundraiser exceeded all expectations...

Community rallies to support outstanding labor and community leader

Over 1,000 people crowded into the Firefighters' Florian Hall in Dorchester last Friday to honor Jerry "Judgie" Leary who passed away after a valiant battle against cancer and give support to his bereaved family.

Leary was a telephone worker, lifelong Dorchester resident and well-known neighborhood guy. As a union activist and Vice President of IBEW Local 2222, he won the admiration of his co-workers during the legendary four month NYNEX strike and many subsequent battles with its successor companies Bell Atlantic and Verizon.

"The event far exceeded our expectations," said Donna Bohan, a Verizon Inside Tech and Local 2222 mobilization committee member who coordinated the event. "It was by far our largest and most successful fundraiser."

"I was really impressed with the wide range of people that came out for Jerry," added Donna. "Who knew that he touched so many people from every walk of life? In addition to hundreds of our members, there were lots of labor leaders, politicians, sports coaches, people from his neighborhood as well as a few CEOs and business leaders. And I was especially happy to see so many of Jerry's kids friends."

We are gearing up for what looks like one of the biggest events in recent history!

The Leary Family Fund event is just a couple weeks away and we have had an unbelievable response to all of our requests for help. Nothing restores your faith in friends and family more than being involved in something like this. We have heard from former classmates of Jerry's from grade school who have since grown to become successful in their various lines of work, we have heard from Organized Labor activists from as far as California and of course throughout Massachusetts. Jerry's spirit and good will was far reaching. Let's start to think ahead to the night of the "time". Admission tickets are available at the door or contact one of our volunteers for more information.

We need volunteers to help out with setting up, selling tickets, and cleaning up so if you can help let us know by emailing one of the volunteers on the committee.

The donations and ads for the Testimonial Book are pouring in and it is shaping up to be the ultimate tribute to a one of a kind guy. Full page ads are still available and the deadline is January 15th so if you are interested please email donna.bohan@verizon.net so space can be held.

Speaking of donations some of the items for the Live and Silent Auction are downright AWESOME! The raffle area is growing to astronomical size and we are thrilled with the sales of table sponsorships and Vacation of your Choice raffle tickets! Please contact us and we can send you tickets by mail or have someone drop them off - sell a few for Jerry - he would be the first to volunteer for anyone else.

Raffle tickets for a "Vacation of your Choice" are available thanks to our friends at Compass Point Retirement Systems who donated a $3,000 vacation to anywhere you want to go in the Continental US! Travel arrangements will be made by Global Destinations - or if you want a Staycation you can take $2500 in cash instead! Tickets are available now or the night of the event.

Fundraiser Planned for January 29, 2010

Every one of us has come across a person who immediately makes an impression on us. A person who volunteers for civic and neighborhood causes, the person who organizes the neighborhood business meetings, the person who steps up time and time again to help his neighborhood and his neighbors. In our corner of the world, Dorchester, Jerry Leary was the person that best fits this description. Jerry Leary and his family have done for Dorchester what some neighborhoods can only dream about. His commitment and drive were legendary, he could always be counted on to lend a hand both in good times and when times got difficult.

Jerry was an adoring husband, a kind and generous father and a loving grandfather who was in constant motion, helping and giving and doing for others every chance he got. Whether you knew him from his lifelong commitment to Dorchester and the various sports, civic, neighborhood or religious organizations that his kids had participated in over the years, or if you had ever worked with "Judgie" on a fundraiser for a neighbor or friend, you knew that he was about the most committed person a lot of us have ever been lucky enough to meet.

Life can be cruel but hardships bring us together to allow us to show that there is a bright side to every situation. The Leary Family find themselves in a precarious situation with Jerry's recent battle with a debilitating illness, and subsequent passing. Lets join together to show our love and support for this wonderful family.

Coworkers, friends and family are organizing an event to benefit the Leary Family. We will be gathering at Florian Hall, Firefighters Local 718 – 55 Hallet Street, Dorchester on Friday January 29, 2010 to show how much we support Jerry and his family.

The evening with feature a live and silent auction, with entertainment and an ad book full of good wishes and gratitude along with the ever popular raffle area! Table reservations will be $200 and include 10 tickets, ads will be accepted at a cost of $100 for half page and $200 for a full page. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the event.
